May Alcott (1832–1888) was an American writer. She was a highly ambitious person in her youth, having worked as a teacher, nurse, and maid. These experiences provided her with authentic material for writing Little Women. May began writing at the age of fifteen and started publishing her works at twenty-one. In 1868, she completed Little Women, which moved countless readers, especially women. The noble spirit she advocated in the book continues to inspire generations. The story in the book can still evoke many fond memories of past life for mothers today. Little Women primarily tells the story of the four March sisters—Meg, Jo, Amy, and Beth—how they strive for independence and how they love their family. Meg is vain and longs to be noble, but she gives up the right to inherit her aunt March's estate. Jo is kind and innocent, with no mixed feelings for Laurie's love, always thinking of others. Amy loves painting, but she ultimately gives up her ambition for high artistic achievement and becomes a compassionate, noble-hearted person who helps the less fortunate. Beth loves music and is selfless, contracting an illness while helping the Hummels and ultimately sacrificing her life for them. The self-respect and independence of the four March sisters reflect the dignity of humanity.
