Some may ask, "What is Journey to the West after all?" The answer is: It is truly a remarkable work, a wondrous text. Running time: 35 hours. Journey to the West is one of China's four great classical novels, a classic of world mythology, included in Hu Shi's Minimum Required Reading List, and an important cornerstone in building the ladder of Chinese civilization. Journey to the West uses rich and fantastical imagination to describe the journey of the four disciples as they travel westward, facing dangers and struggles in the wild mountains and treacherous waters. It transforms the myriad hardships they encounter into the eighty-one trials set by demons and monsters, vividly portraying the harshness of the landscape through the personified, compassionate spirits of animals. By subduing demons and taming monsters, it praises the perseverance of the pilgrims in overcoming obstacles, inspiring people to fight bravely, never give up, and remain undeterred in pursuit of their goals. Since its publication, Journey to the West has been beloved by readers across generations, with its stories and characters known to all, young and old. After the founding of the People's Republic, the People's Literature Publishing House alone printed nearly three million copies. Countless reprints, abridged editions, and adapted versions are beyond count. Generations of critics have held Journey to the West in the highest regard.
