Features: Since its publication in 1988, this Textbook has been widely welcomed by teachers and students, earning widespread acclaim and making significant contributions to the field of linguistics in China. However, over the past decade, linguistics has made substantial progress, and new achievements urgently need to be incorporated. In light of this, the chief editor, Professor Zhuanglin Hu, along with a group of young and middle-aged linguists, has revised the textbook. The revised edition incorporates feedback from teachers using the book online, removing or condensing content deemed less important, and fully reflects the new developments in linguistics over the past decade. While maintaining depth in theory, it has also enhanced the accessibility and of the language. The questions and exercises have been adjusted and supplemented, and answers are provided. Additionally, to cater to readers with varying levels of expertise, the editors will publish an advanced linguistics textbook, which will focus on more challenging and theoretically complex topics for graduate teaching. The advanced textbook is scheduled for release in the near future and is eagerly anticipated by readers. The guiding principles for writing this book are: ① Primarily aimed at advanced English majors, but also suitable for postgraduate students in English. ② Written in English, with as many English examples as possible. ③ In terms of content, it should convey fundamental knowledge while reflecting the new developments in linguistics. ④ In terms of perspective, it should not be confined to a single school of thought. ⑤ The content of the book can be taught in detail or concisely, and instructors can adjust it according to their school’s teaching plans and students’ proficiency levels.
