What should I do if I have varicocele?

Patient's question:

I would like to ask for some advice. I have undergone a varicocele ligation surgery. The doctor said there is a 1 in 100,000 chance of having children in the future. Does this mean that I will not be able to have children anymore? What should I do about the varicocele?

Doctor's answer:

Varicocele refers to the obstruction of venous return in the spermatic cord. Due to varicocele, local temperature decreases, aspiration occurs, the pH changes, and residual toxic substances can all lead to an increase in sperm count, an improvement in sperm motility, and a decrease in the proportion of abnormal sperm. As a result, male fertility is reduced, leading to male infertility. However, not all patients with varicocele are infertile. Additionally, during treatment, it is recommended to maintain good lifestyle habits and have a proper diet.
