Publishing Date: 1992-05-01
Features: Articles written in the past half-century, now compiled and published in three volumes. Volume I collects political commentaries written by the author from June 1941 to February 1986, primarily commentaries for the Liberation Daily, Xinhua News Agency, and People's Daily, totaling 114 pieces, with an additional 12 commentaries and news articles. These commentaries generally have strong. They are still collected here (with only a few exceptions removed) for the following reasons:
Most of these commentaries, especially those from the 1940s and 1950s, were reviewed and approved by the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. Some were decided upon by the Central Committee in terms of both titles and main viewpoints, and two were even discussed and approved by an enlarged meeting of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee (specifically, Re the Historical Experience of the Dictatorship of the Proletariat and The Revolution in Tibet and Nehru's Philosophy). Therefore, they largely represent the Central Committee's stance on relevant issues. Compiling these commentaries together can serve as important materials for studying the development of the Party's policies; as evidence of the Party's leadership in party newspaper work, they also provide significant insights.
Second, the majority of commentaries from the 1940s and 1950s were revised by Comrade Mao Zedong, with many important passages written in his own handwriting (which is also why some commentary-style news articles were included in this book). Editing these commentaries into a book will not only help study Comrade Mao Zedong's thoughts, writings, and working style but also serve as a to him. Without Comrade Mao Zedong's guidance and mentorship, I would have found it very difficult to write these articles, and my writing skills would not have improved as they did in the book. The book prints all the sentences added by Comrade Mao Zedong during revisions in bold (it is a pity that the original drafts of the Liberation Daily commentaries are lost, and only a part of the revised originals of the People's Daily commentaries are preserved). Similarly, sentences added by Comrade Liu Shaoqi during revisions are indicated in Italic.
Third, these commentaries are generally argumentative, with sharp edges and no mercy for opponents. Although the writing quality varies across articles, and some arguments may now seem inappropriate, overall, the fighting spirit of these commentaries remains a cherished mark of the tense and combative years of the past. The current environment and tasks are very different from those times, but we still need to fight and still need a fighting spirit. Compiling these past commentaries also hopes to contribute to the current press and commentary circles.
