Although these stories cannot be entirely treated as reliable historical records, most of them are based on some facts and can be cross-referenced with books like Zuo Zhuan, Guoyu, and Lüshi Chunqiu to serve as historical materials reflecting the social and historical landscape of Qi in the later Spring and Autumn period. Yan Ying (c. 556–500 BC), styled Pingzhong, was a native of Yiwei (now Gaomi, Shandong). He served as the chief minister of Qi during the Spring and Autumn period. He held office for over 50 years under the reigns of three kings—Ling, Zhuang, and Jing. Known for his frugality, diligence, humility, and respect for scholars, he paid attention to political reforms and cared about the people, opposing superstitious practices such as prayers for blessings and averting disasters. This book provides a multi-faceted account of Yan Ying's words, deeds, and political activities, highlighting his political views and personal character.
