Features: In today's society, most people believe that "headache is a minor ailment" and that taking painkillers is sufficient. There's no need to see a doctor for such a small issue, thinking it's unnecessary. In reality, this view is incorrect. Indeed, headache is a common symptom, a sensation, mostly non-specific, and usually resolves well. However, it can also be a signal of other diseases, and some headache symptoms may indicate serious conditions. Therefore, when experiencing a headache, one should neither dismiss it carelessly nor overreact. Instead, it's important to seek medical attention promptly, identify the cause, and start treatment early. Furthermore, certain painkillers are not suitable for some patients, such as those with poor liver or kidney function, or those with gastric or duodenal ulcers. These individuals should avoid taking painkillers.
Disadvantages of Taking Painkillers:
(1) Masks the condition, leading to complacency. Because pain is often the only thing that prompts you to pay attention. Once the pain subsides, you might stop caring, but the disease continues to progress. When the headache returns and the painkillers no longer work, it might be too late to regret it.
(2) Treats symptoms, not the root cause. Painkillers only provide temporary relief but do not address the underlying cause, making it easy for the condition to recur.
(3) Some medications contain stimulants (caffeine). Caffeine is a stimulant that can relieve headaches to some extent, which is why many painkillers contain it. However, excessive consumption can lead to addiction, and over time, these medications may become ineffective.
(4) Can cause liver or kidney dysfunction. As the saying goes, "all medicine has side effects." The liver and kidneys are the primary organs responsible for metabolizing drugs. Taking medication without a doctor's guidance can potentially damage your liver and kidneys. This is especially dangerous for those who already have liver or kidney issues, as these drugs can cause further harm. For example, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) can reduce kidney blood flow, leading to kidney damage. While this is usually reversible in healthy individuals, it can result in kidney failure in those with pre-existing kidney problems.
(5) Can cause duodenal or gastric ulcers. Some painkillers, particularly aspirin, can worsen or trigger ulcers, leading to gastrointestinal bleeding or even shock and death. Therefore, patients with duodenal or severe gastritis must be cautious when taking these medications on their own.
