Through the portrayal of Joseph Fouché's life, the book presents a panoramic view of French society and politics from the time of the French Revolution to the Napoleonic era and the subsequent restoration of the Louis XVIII dynasty. It also depicts the actions of the subject and various individuals around him, as well as the psychological and ideological motivations that drive these actions. Zweig wrote the biography as if it were a novel based on historical records, and as a result, the characters' actions, expressions, and psychological activities in the realistic historical scenes retain the style and techniques of his famous works such as The Twenty-Four Hours of a Woman's Life and The Castle of the Crossed Hands, making this book a masterpiece.
Joseph Fouché was always in pursuit of power, and the highest power at that. Unlike most people, he was content with the sense of power and did not need external medals and honors. Fouché was extremely ambitious but not vain; he sought power but did not care for outward appearances. He was a true master of political intrigue, his eyes fixed only on the tangible potential of power, while dismissing the external symbols of power as dung.
