Biography of Wang Xizhi

Publishing Date: 2005-07-01
Features: Wang Xizhi was a renowned calligrapher of the Jin Dynasty, whose calligraphy became world-famous and was revered by later generations as the "Sage of Calligraphy." His "Preface to the Orchid Pavilion" is even more widely known. Wang Xuanzhi was the seventh son of Wang Xizhi and was equally celebrated as his father, often referred to as "The Two Wangs." This book provides a realistic critique of the lives, calligraphic arts, political thoughts, and aesthetic theories of Wang Xizhi and Wang Xuanzhi. Additionally, it offers an in-depth comparison of the similarities and differences between the calligraphy of the "big Wang" and the "little Wang."
Postscript: There is very little literature material available on Wang Xizhi and Wang Xuanzhi, and what exists is often full of ambiguities. Writing a critical biography of them is undoubtedly a challenging task. A colleague once told me, "Writing a critical biography of the 'Two Wangs' is akin to pioneering work." Given my knowledge and capabilities, taking on such a pioneering role would be beyond my capacity. Over the years, I have worked tirelessly with no room for complacency, but I still wonder about the outcome. Even a small harvest, however modest, should be cherished, as it not only contains my hard work but also the care of my peers and the labor of my elders. During the writing process of this book, I received warm support from Professor Wang Buge of Southeast University, Associate Professor Huang Bo of Nanjing University of the Arts, calligrapher Mr. Huang Bo, and Deputy Editor Zuo Jian of Nanjing University Press. Professor Yu Qingyi and Editor-in-Chief Wang Chunnan of Jiangsu Ancient Books Publishing House took the time to review the entire manuscript amidst their busy schedules, offering meticulous guidance and encouragement. Comrade Wang Lixing of Yilin Publishing House contributed to the translation of certain parts of this book. I extend my heartfelt gratitude to all of them.
Pioneering work is indeed a trial, and it is far from easy. However, it does not excuse errors, so I humbly invite experts and readers to offer their criticisms and advice. Guo Lianfu, September 20, 1995, Nanjing
