Orphan's Lament – Set to the Tune of "Little White Cabbage"
Autumn comes, leaves turn yellow,
Fifteen or sixteen, lost my home!
The Japanese are ruthless,
Killed my father and mother, leaving none!
Father and mother killed, house taken,
Young and small, wandering all alone!
Stepped outside, eyes filled with darkness,
Clouds drift high, wind grows cold!
Sun sets west, nowhere to sleep,
Thinking of father and mother, tears overflow!
Tears overflow, tears overflow!
Peach blossoms bloom, apricot petals fall,
I miss my father and mother, who knows it all?
Father and mother miss me like a gust of wind,
I dream of father and mother in my sleep!
Father and mother's heads stained red with blood,
The Japanese are truly fierce!
Father and mother lie still, no sound,
Thinking of father and mother, tears fill my eyes!
Wind howls sadly, moon sheds no light,
Cried for father and mother until the third watch!
Cried for father and mother, cried for father and mother!
Roosters crow, dogs jump over walls,
Running around, where to go?
Rivers flow, grapes grow,
Winding path leads back to my home!
Home is eight hundred miles away,
Good fields and gardens ruined in vain!
Father and mother died without peace,
Not avenging their deaths brings no honor!
Determined to join the guerrilla team,
Won battles and returned to my home!
Back to my home, back to my home!
