Features: In early summer 1942, the Japanese invaders launched an unprecedentedly brutal "May First" large-scale "sweeping operation" against our Jizhong base area. Along the banks of the Hutuo River, the wind whistled, gunshots echoed, and artillery roared. In Zaoyuan, by the Hutuo River in Jizhong, the bugle calls of the Youth Anti-Japanese Vanguard Corps and the whistles of the Children's Corps could be heard everywhere amidst the storm. Wu Xiaolong, a scout from the district team, had escaped the enemy's pursuit and run over ten miles, arriving at the head of Gaocun Village. At that moment, a young girl came out of the village. She seemed to be burdened with many worries, yet also deeply focused on a particular problem. Wu Xiaolong recognized her as Xu Feng, the head of the district Women's Salvation League, and quickly ran toward her.
Xu Feng was still thinking about the unpleasant debate at the district committee meeting earlier, as well as her romantic relationship with Hu Wenyu, the district party secretary. Her mind was a tangled mess. After hearing Wu Xiaolong's report, she felt it necessary to inform the district committee immediately and turned back to look for Hu Ji. Xu Feng arrived at the location where the meeting had just ended, but only the honest and straightforward old district head, Cao Fuxiang, was waiting for the village cadres. As soon as he saw Xu Feng, he praised her: "Xu Feng, your mouth is really sharp! You convinced everyone at the meeting with your words!"
Earlier, at the meeting, Hu Wenyu had opposed immediately mobilizing the masses to dig tunnels, calling it "evading the struggle." Only Xu Feng insisted on following the (notice) from the prefecture-level party committee and immediately starting to dig the tunnels. They argued fiercely for a long time, finally, everyone agreed with Xu Feng's opinion. Although Hu Wenyu reluctantly agreed, he was clearly displeased.
