Features: In Tang Yongli's view, the traditional Chinese meticulous painting is a new face that embodies the advantages and characteristics of meticulous painting while incorporating many artistic elements. It possesses rich expressive power. When he combines meticulous painting, freehand brushwork, and color into a coherent and organic whole, he is essentially constructing a new order, a new organism, and an "encyclopedia-like" landscape. The fusion of meticulous and freehand brushwork is not only technically significant but also represents an artistic revolution. It signifies the dismantling of traditional boundaries, and the paper's world becomes infinitely free as boundaries are broken. At its core, the painter perceives the phenomenal world as essentially deceptive, and only through multidimensional approaches can one capture the intricate characteristics of the "totality." Therefore, a broad and inclusive attitude reflects a lucid awareness of the chaotic nature of the vast world, while also embodying a high level of self-awareness and a free mindset.
Taking Dunhuang as the theme, he attempts to unravel the mysteries of the world and life, which is a grand proposition. If Tang Yongli had strictly adhered to the conventions of meticulous painting, insisting on a single-dimensional approach to creation, he would have ultimately been unable to delve deeply into this proposition. Instead, by combining meticulous and freehand brushwork and employing various techniques to supplement meticulous painting, he sought to break free from fixed forms, achieve a leap from one form to another, and fully enjoy the freedom of creation. This approach gives Tang Yongli's "Dunhuang Series" works a rich, complex, and interpenetrating nature, opening new perspectives and boundaries for people to re-examine and understand meticulous painting.
