Features: During a recent trip to Putuo Mountain in Zhejiang with several composers and friends from the press, we passed through Shenjiamen, revisiting an old place filled with many memories. Especially vivid were the experiences from 1959 when I accompanied Mr. Ma Shenglong to Shenjiamen and Dongguan Island in Zhoushan Archipelago for in-depth fieldwork. Though more than forty years have passed, the scenes from that time and my friendship with Mr. Ma Shenglong remain fresh in my mind. Mr. Ma Shenglong is particularly skilled in composing and arranging various combinations of plucked instruments. The newly published Collection of Folk Plucked Instrument Ensemble Pieces (2) includes eight pieces adapted or composed by Mr. Ma Shenglong. Each piece has its own unique characteristics. In terms of instrumentation, while highlighting the playing features of each instrument, he skillfully blends the strongly individualistic instruments into a unified ensemble, achieving a wonderfully harmonious sound. I believe these pieces will be greatly appreciated by fellow folk music workers.
