Features: Character portraits and plaster portraits are structurally consistent in terms of bones and muscles. The difference lies in that plaster portraits are artistic works processed by artists, where their dynamic expressions and emotions are clear and consistent during sketching. In contrast, character portrait sketching requires artistic adjustments based on the model's features during the process. Additionally, their textures, shapes, and spatial sensations differ significantly. Plaster portraits are usually of foreigners, while character portraits are typically of Chinese people. There are still certain physiological differences in their head features (e.g., hair, brow ridge, nasal bridge), and candidates must accumulate experience through regular training to establish different painting techniques for character and plaster portraits.
(1) Sketching: Carefully observe the model's facial shape features, quickly outline the external contours of the portrait based on the feeling, and pay attention to the rationality of composition and dynamics. Determine the positions of the eyes, nose, mouth, ears, and hair according to the portrait's overall shape (relatively generalized) and the "Three Courts and Five Eyes" rule, and draw the outlines of the neck and shoulders.
(2) Structural In-depth Work: After establishing the large contours and proportions, start working on the five senses to delve into the structure.
(3) Light and Shadow In-depth Work: Based on the growth characteristics of bones and muscles, identify the two major light and shadow boundaries of the portrait (the facial light and shadow boundary from the brow ridge through the nose to the mouth and the light and shadow boundary from the zygoma to the mandible to the neck, which sometimes merge into one). Emphasize the prominence of the five senses by shaping the light and shadow transitions.
(4) Overall Adjustment: After completing the local modeling, whether the final adjustments are well-executed is the key to the candidate's success.
(5) Adjustment Methods.
