Features: This series of "Literati Lovers" aims to explore the emotional relationships between famous literati and women or men from the Tang, Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties as the main, using biographical and literary research as the primary material. Through a biographical approach, it presents poignant experiences in an accessible manner, bringing characters to life and recreating the social atmosphere of the time. The selected figures were highly representative of their eras. Yuan Zhen's "Record of Meeting in the Garden" (also known as "The Story of Yingying") has a certain real-life prototype and vividly reflects the marital and romantic ideals of Tang Dynasty literati. The story later evolved into "The Western Chamber," demonstrating the evolution of ancient love concepts. Li Qingzhao and Zhao Mingcheng were an exceptionally loving couple in Chinese history. Their love was set against the backdrop of the rise of Neo-Confucianism in the Song Dynasty, the sudden shift in women's romantic perspectives, and the great social upheaval between the Northern and Southern Song. Zhao Mengfu was not only a renowned litterateur, calligrapher, and painter but also a nobleman of the fallen dynasty. Under the social context of Mongol rule in the Yuan Dynasty, his views on marriage and love underwent certain changes, revealing the process of cultural integration between the Central Plains and foreign influences. Feng Menglong lived in the Ming Dynasty, a period resembling the early emergence of capitalist factors, the awakening of urban consciousness, and the pursuit of sensual pleasures. He paid close attention to women's themes throughout his life, and his works embody the views on women and love of Ming Dynasty people. Hou Huizhen, after marrying, was deeply missed by Feng Menglong in numerous poems, and he never visited brothels again. Mao Biqiang and Dong Xiaowan lived during the transition between the Ming and Qing dynasties. Their love connected with the great changes of the era. Mao Biqiang created a unique "Recollection in Words" style of love poems for Dong Xiaowan, which were widely admired by later generations. However, the historical records of such ancient lovers often differ, with one partner's literary success making their romantic history famous and widely spread, while the other's remains relatively obscure. In this series, Yuan Zhen, Li Qingzhao, Zhao Mengfu, Feng Menglong, and Mao Biqiang all left behind a wealth of works and personal life materials, while the other half of the couples have much fewer records. Therefore, the series inevitably focuses more on one partner in each story. All these aspects sufficiently demonstrate the process of ancient Chinese marital and romantic concepts and their diverse manifestations. The series aims to combine popular accessibility with academic rigor. At the same time, it offers a new and in-depth understanding of the literary creations of specific authors. The authors of the series hope that readers will enjoy exploring history with interest and gain aesthetic pleasure, thereby benefiting from the establishment of healthy marital and romantic concepts. The evaluation of the Buddhist master Zhao Puchu on the legendary couple Zhao Mengfu and Guan Daosheng is truly apt. Zhao Mengfu was a master of arts, with his paintings hailed as the "pinnacle of Yuan Dynasty art," his calligraphy known as the "Zhao style," and his rare works still treasured in the art world. He excelled in poetry, prose, and other literary forms, pioneering a new era in Yuan Dynasty poetry. Guan Daosheng was equally talented and beautiful, skilled in poetry, calligraphy, and painting, with a fresh and elegant brushwork. For thirty years, this couple of poetic, calligraphic, and artistic brilliance shared their artistic pursuits in the literary and artistic circles and supported each other through the turbulent waves of official life, leaving behind many touching stories.
