General Introduction to Secondary School Mathematics Teaching

Author: Cao Caihan (Compiler)

Publish Date: 2006-01-01
Features: This book is compiled based on the lecture notes of the author's many years of teaching "Mathematics Teaching Methods for Secondary School" at the Department of Mathematics, Beijing Normal University. The lecture notes were originally distributed to the participants of the training sessions in the form of course materials by the Shandong Provincial Association of Mathematics Education in Higher Normal Institutions in 1984. This compilation is based on that course material, with adjustments to the structure, enrichment of the content, and appropriate theoretical improvements. The book aims to achieve the following points:
1. To discuss "why to teach," "what to teach," and "how to teach" by correctly understanding the philosophy of mathematics education and the development patterns of mathematics education, making it clear to readers what should and should not be done, and identifying the direction of mathematics education reform.
2. The guiding principle of the book's structure is "from general to specific." That is, developing mathematical abilities is the core issue in the teaching objectives of secondary school mathematics, while developing mathematical thinking ability is the core issue in the cultivation of abilities in secondary school mathematics teaching. Therefore, the discussion on mathematical thinking becomes the core of the entire book and is consistently emphasized throughout.
3. When introducing specific teaching experiences, the book strives to clarify their background conditions and theoretical foundations, enabling readers to understand "how to do it" and "why it is done this way." This book can serve as a textbook for "Mathematics Teaching Methods for Secondary School" in higher normal institutions. Some purely theoretical academic discussions can be flexibly handled based on class time and student conditions. The book can also be used as a reference for master's students in the field of subject education (mathematics education), mathematics education researchers, and secondary school mathematics teachers.
