Linguistic Basic Theory (Revised Edition)

Author: Cen Yunqiang et al.

Publishing Date: 2006-01-01
Features: This book uses the six linguistic frameworks proposed by the father of modern linguistics, Saussure—linguistics of language, speech of language, synchronic linguistics, diachronic linguistics, internal linguistics, and external linguistics—as the structure of the entire book. It particularly delves into the speech of language, which Saussure proposed but did not extensively study, in a relatively systematic way in college textbooks. Additionally, it includes a chapter titled "Cross-Linguistics" to introduce new developments in linguistics by topic. The book handles the relationship between critique, inheritance, and development quite well and has been well-received by a broad readership. However, due to the relatively rushed time of its original compilation, the content appears somewhat thin. In this revision, we have added a significant amount of new content based on the original book, such as the concept of syllable metrical structure and non-linear phonology in the phonetics section, sentence meaning and semantic reference in the semantics section, the lexical content of speech in the vocabulary section, types of word order classification and thematic progression models in the grammar section, and the content of writing application in the writing section. In the cross-linguistics section, topics such as typology and functional linguistics are covered. This book strives for four combinations: static and dynamic, single and cross, theory and application, and historical and contemporary.
