Features: This book is not about love, but about raw desire. It caused a sensation and controversy upon its release. The Boston District Court ruled that its content was suspected of being pornographic and banned it. Many schools and public libraries also refused to allow it to be introduced. To this day, no one would argue that there is any excess in its depiction. Instead, it has become clearer from its attitude toward sex that it holds landmark significance. It was the first to view sex as a driving force for crime, opening up a new realm of discussion about desire and greed in crime fiction.
