Patient's question:
My little one has been born for about five days now, but the jaundice is quite pronounced. Could you please tell me how long does physiological jaundice typically last without interruption in normal babies? How long does physiological jaundice last continuously in babies?Doctor's answer:
60-80% of newborns develop physiological jaundice after birth. It appears 2-3 days after birth, peaks between 4-6 days, and starts to fade between 7-10 days. In full-term newborns, jaundice typically disappears completely within 14 days. In premature infants, jaundice usually disappears around 20 days.If the jaundice level in full-term newborns exceeds 13 mg/dL, in premature infants exceeds 15 mg/dL, in 24-hour-old newborns exceeds 5 mg/dL, or in 1-hour-old newborns exceeds 0.5 mg/dL, it indicates pathological jaundice, which requires timely intervention and treatment.
If it is pathological, hemolysis may recur easily. If it is viral hepatitis or cytomegalovirus, treatment should be administered. Typically, it can resolve around 14-5 days after birth without recurring jaundice.
