Does newborn diarrhea require medication?

Patient's question:

The baby is still very young, only a few months old, and recently has had diarrhea, which makes me very concerned. I have been feeding him less, and then there's the issue of the color being a bit off. Since the baby is so small, I'm worried that medication might not be good for him. Do newborns with diarrhea need to take medicine?

Doctor's answer:

This month, if the baby has diarrhea quite frequently every day, medication may still be necessary. Additionally, it's important to avoid getting cold. Drink more water. If the baby is breastfed, the mother should avoid spicy and irritating foods. It's best not to eat small, frequent meals. However, after more than a month, the number of bowel movements will significantly decrease. Generally, it won't exceed three times a day. If there's no improvement, further tests on the baby's stool should be conducted at the hospital.
