How do babies supplement vitamin D

Patient's question:

My son is 8 months old, and I want to supplement his vitamin D. Is fish oil glycerin better as a drop or a capsule? I've visited several pharmacies but couldn't find any drops. Are there other suitable options besides fish oil glycerin?

Doctor's answer:

Hello: Taking fish oil is the best! The normal source of vitamin D for infants is sunlight. However, with the depletion of the Earth's ozone layer and the rise in skin cancer rates, sunbathing is no longer a safe way to supplement vitamin D. For this reason, infants should be supplemented with vitamin D before they are two months old, with a daily intake of 200 international units (IU) being ideal. Although most formula milk on the market is fortified with vitamin D, if an infant consumes less than 500 milliliters of formula milk per day, vitamin D supplementation is necessary. Although breast milk is insufficient in vitamin D, it remains the best nutritional food for infants.
