Pureness arises from filth, and brightness emerges from darkness.
【Original Text】The dung is the most filthy, but after transforming into a cicada, it drinks dew in the autumn wind; the withered grass has no light, but the fireflies it gives birth to shine brilliantly in the summer nights. Thus, we know that purity often arises from filth, and brightness always comes from darkness.
【Translation】The insect born in filth is the most disgusting, but after transforming into a cicada, it drinks pure dew in the autumn wind; the withered grass has no light, but the fireflies it gives birth to shine brilliantly in the summer night sky. From this, we can see that pure things often come from filth, and bright things often arise from darkness.
【Analysis】The Japanese TV drama Asakusa, depicts the life journey of a woman who faces hardships but never gives up her dreams, eventually successfully managing a chain supermarket. Anyone who has watched this drama deeply imprints in their mind the resilient and determined image of Asakusa, who never submits to her environment. Around us in life, there are many "Asakusas" who live earnestly and let their lives shine; yet, there are also those who undervalue themselves, always blaming their misfortunes on their poor environment. However, there is an ancient saying, "True heroes are not afraid of humble origins." A person has no need to belittle themselves just because their environment is not as good as others—have you not seen how many successful people have been shaped by hardship? In difficult environments, people's will to fight is easily ignited, while in environments, people are easily led to complacency, unknowingly becoming "greenhouse weaklings." Once removed from the warmth of their shelter, they can no longer bloom beautifully.
Toil brings prosperity, while idleness leads to ruin.
【Original Text】A horse that runs wild can still be trained to gallop; metal that falls outside the furnace will eventually be melted and shaped. Only one who indulges in leisure and idleness will never make progress in life. Bai Sha said, "It is not shameful to have many flaws, but it is my worry if one never learns from their mistakes." Truly, this is a profound truth.
【Translation】A fierce horse, if properly trained, can still be ridden to travel far; metal that falls outside the furnace will eventually be melted and shaped into usable objects. Only those who indulge in leisure and idleness will never achieve growth in life. Therefore, Bai Sha said, "It is not shameful to have many flaws, but it is my worry if one never learns from their mistakes." This is indeed a timeless truth.
【Analysis】Everyone has their own strengths and weaknesses. If a person's strengths are fully utilized, they often produce great benefits. And what are considered weaknesses, if properly understood and applied, can also become a driving force. For example, assigning a talkative and restless student as a discipline committee member often yields practical management benefits. That student, who was originally restless and talkative, might transform into a dedicated and strict monitor, urging other students to listen attentively. From this, we can see that "everyone has their unique talent." As long as each person receives development suited to their nature, they can unleash their potential and achieve success. Modern enterprises emphasize human resource management, one of the most fundamental and important goals being to place employees in roles that suit their talents and maximize their potential, thereby helping the company achieve greater profits.
