Features: Suzhou bonsai, which has developed in the region centered around Suzhou, a place where literati gathered, artists flourished, and culture thrived throughout the generations. The development of Suzhou bonsai has benefited from superior natural, historical, and cultural conditions. The area's pleasant scenery provides the best model for creating bonsai. One of the distinctive features of Suzhou bonsai is its realistic portrayal of the natural landscapes of the Taihu Lake area. The artistic conception of sparse forests and distant mountains, elegant and remote, is embodied in it. Due to its temperate climate, convenient land and water transportation, and an extremely rich variety of plants suitable for bonsai production, Suzhou also produces mountain stones ideal for water and stone bonsai, such as the translucent and intricate Taihu Lake stones, as well as high-quality materials like Kunshan stone, stalactites, and sandstone, providing ample material conditions for bonsai making.
In the Ming Dynasty, influenced by the rise of the "Wumen Painting School," and by the Qing Dynasty, it had already achieved the artistic level of "Yunlin Mountain and Tree Painting Conception." The selected materials are represented by local tree species such as winter jasmine, Chinese elm, and three-lobed maples. The main method involves excavating ancient trunks and using rattan wire for wiring. The techniques of "rough wiring and fine pruning" and the combination of wiring and pruning emphasize naturalness, with an artistic style that is vigorous, ancient, and naturally elegant.
The modern characteristics of Suzhou bonsai modeling are: focusing on naturalness, allowing the shape to follow the trunk, and striving for rapid shaping. It has broken free from the constraints of traditional modeling, which involved long formation periods, cumbersome procedures, and rigid styles. This book introduces the historical evolution and formation of the Su-style bonsai, the modeling characteristics and artistic techniques of Suzhou bonsai, the production of Suzhou tree-trunk bonsai, and the appreciation of Suzhou bonsai.
