Anthony Dvo?ák's Violin Sonatina in G Minor, Op. 100, was completed shortly before the sensational premiere of his Symphony No. 9 in E Minor - From the New World (hereinafter referred to as From the New World) on December 16, 1893, in New York. This sonatina is the last chamber music piece he composed during his time in the United States. The numbering of this work also marked that his creative output had reached 100 pieces at that time. Dvo?ák conceived of this sonatina as a gift for his six children, especially for his 15-year-old daughter Ottilie and his 10-year-old son T?ník, and thus the difficulty of the piece was tailored to the level that the children could handle. In a letter to his Berlin publisher, Fritz Simrock, on January 2, 1894, Dvo?ák wrote: "During the days of November 23 to December 3, 1893, I wrote a piece that, though not long, was quite novel and full of natural emotional expression." He wrote in the letter, "This piece was composed for young people (as a gift for my two children). But adults can certainly also enjoy a lot from it."
