On the day a "flower" flies, a magpie heard the groans of a doe giving birth and landed on a nearby branch to watch. Shortly after, a fawn was born. The magpie chirped, "What a beautiful child! Oh! He's already standing up! How amazing! Can he run?"
"Of course," the doe replied gently. "But please excuse me, I'm feeling very weak right now and can't spare the time to talk with you."
"When will he grow feathers?" the magpie asked, unwilling to end the conversation.
"I'm so sorry, but I don't have time to talk with you," the doe said.
The doe licked her baby clean with her tongue. The little one's red coat was covered in beautiful spots, and his face was still drowsy. It was early summer, and the morning sunlight streamed through the thick leaves into the forest, where birds of all kinds sang together. The warblers sang endlessly, the doves cooed continuously, and even the chickadees were chirping happily.
The fawn smelled the scent of his mother and snuggled close to her, bumping around until he found his mother's teat and began nursing.
"Bambi, my little Bambi," the mother murmured as she stroked her baby, calling him softly.
All the does in the thicket knew Bambi's mother well. Bambi often followed her, happily trotting through the narrow deer paths, the dense leaves brushing against his body—how comfortable that felt!
