Features: My name is Huck Finn, and I'm a poor kid. My dad is always drunk and roams around all day without coming home. Everyone here knows that not long ago, Tom and I found the money the robbers hid in the cave. We each got six thousand dollars—all in gold coins. We got rich and lived high for a while. Later, Judge Thatcher deposited the money in the bank for me. My alcoholic dad hasn’t been seen for over a year. If he had, he would have traded all the money for liquor long ago. The Widow Douglas, who lives in the village, saw how lonely I was and took me in. She dressed me in decent new clothes and sent me to school to learn to read and write. It was a life I couldn’t stand. The sister of the widow, Miss Watson, always picked on me, and the new clothes made me feel uncomfortable all over. I couldn’t remember many of the rules. For example, as soon as the widow rang the dinner bell, I had to get there on time. Before eating, the widow would bow her head and mumble prayers, which made my stomach grumble in protest. That night, I lay by the window but couldn’t sleep. I saw the stars twinkling in the night sky and heard the leaves rustling in the woods. The dead silence in the house made me feel very lonely. I tried to recall everything that had happened that day to find something fun, but nothing came to mind. I felt really miserable.
It was already midnight when the clock chimed, "Tock, tock, tock." I was yawning and about to go to bed when suddenly, a faint "meow!" came into my ears. I immediately lowered my voice and "meowed" back twice, then blew out the candle and slipped out the window. My good friend Tom Sawyer was waiting for me outside!
