It is said that Dou Yan Shan, when young, was wicked and had no children until he was thirty. His father dreamed to him, urging him to "quickly repent and turn to goodness" and "change for the better." He took these words to heart and helped the poor, did many kindnesses, and accumulated great virtue. Later, he had five sons, all of whom passed the imperial examinations. The Vice Minister Feng Dao wrote a poem saying, "Dou Yan Shan of Yan Mountain, taught his sons with virtue."
Five sons: Dou Yan Shan had five sons—Zhi, Yin, Kan, Fu, and Xi. The eldest became the Minister of Rites, the second the Vice Minister of Rites, the third a Supplement to the Chancellery, the fourth a Censor, and the fifth a Court Recorder, all renowned in the world.
