Features: Rationally facing stage-specific career confusion
A friend of mine, Liu Li, has been working in a bank handling customer complaints for two years and has always been confused about how to advance to a higher position (customer analysis role). Liu Li majored in customer analysis in college, but her current bank does not have such positions, and the company does not value this function either. However, Liu Li herself is very eager to work in this role. What should she do?
Ye, who used to have a stable "white-collar" job in a company, has recently been troubled: due to business adjustments, her department might be canceled. She had always been optimistic about the company's development and had rarely considered creating a "backup plan" for herself. Worse, when faced with potential career changes, Ye suddenly realized she couldn’t see where her career path was headed. At the same time, she suddenly noticed she was no longer young, and after four years of work, it seemed like she had achieved nothing. She wanted to leave everything behind and continue learning, but lacked the courage. In reality, many people like them lose direction in their career development at some point. White-collar women should take a closer look at themselves and reflect deeply, make a plan, or else, it might not just be career advancement at stake—the next person to lose their "cheese" could be you.
Since career confusion is a normal stage in one's career, facing it instead of avoiding it is the right way to solve the problem. Facing confusion requires first recognizing oneself correctly. However, we find that many people in this stage often unconsciously exaggerate the negative factors in life and work and their own shortcomings while ignoring the positive aspects.
I have a friend named Qin Qin, who is very introverted. She is gentle, independent, and reluctant to engage with external changes. She prefers to interact with others in a calm manner and avoids deep communication. She lacks initiative and has a weak drive to advance. She overthinks things, focuses on results, and is overly cautious. However, she has a strong sense of responsibility, handles things meticulously, pays attention to details, and strives for perfection. She is highly organized and planned but can sometimes appear stubborn and inflexible. She does not pay much attention to trying new ideas or methods. The characteristics in Qin Qin’s personality—her desire for stability, reluctance to take risks, and aversion to innovation and change—are the biggest obstacles to her working in the IT industry. Therefore, despite her excellent basic abilities, her lack of motivation and excessive caution, coupled with her preference for quiet and stability, make her feel immense pressure and discomfort in an industry that updates knowledge rapidly and develops swiftly. On the other hand, her strong sense of responsibility makes her highly suitable for jobs with clear goals where she can see direct results. Programming, for example, perfectly fits this requirement. This is also why she was able to be recognized as an advanced worker year after year, with her work performance highly praised, even though she believed the job was extremely unsuitable for her personality.
However, in conversations with Qin Qin, you don’t hear her acknowledge the compatibility between her personality and her career; instead, she emphasizes the negative aspects, highlights her discomfort with the competitive environment, and even says she doesn’t think she has any strengths. Focusing on one’s shortcomings and the aspects that are not well-aligned with one’s career is a common problem for people in career confusion. Many people fall into this trap: exaggerating negative factors, which leads to negative emotions, making them passive and restless, ignoring their strengths and positive aspects, further exaggerating the negative factors, and thus falling into a vicious cycle. They might also attribute other workplace issues, such as emotional instability caused by the company’s management environment or interpersonal dynamics, to the exaggerated negative factors. This prevents them from calmly and rationally analyzing the problem, correctly understanding their situation, and identifying the root cause of the issue. This also has a negative impact on her career advancement.
Breaking out of the confusion trap To face confusion correctly, one must break out of this trap. Qin Qin’s first step is to rationally and objectively examine her current work and psychological state. She should honestly list her strengths and weaknesses, the aspects where her personality matches and does not match her career, and then analyze the reasons for her career confusion rationally. Adjust her mindset. A positive mindset is the source of strength for any work. Qin Qin has excellent basic abilities but lacks confidence and the drive to take action. Therefore, for her, adjusting her mindset, recognizing her many strengths and talents, and boosting her confidence are the most important and fundamental steps.
Analyze strengths and weaknesses, leverage strengths and avoid weaknesses. During our conversation, Qin Qin mentioned several times that she is interested in sales, but given her current mindset, she cannot adapt to the high self-achievement drive and the ability to withstand failures and setbacks required in the sales industry. On the other hand, she has eight years of experience in the IT industry, with a solid foundation and a deep understanding of the field. If she decides to change careers, we believe her best option would be to pursue a career related to computer science, leveraging her accumulated knowledge and experience, rather than starting from scratch. Based on her personality traits, she would be more suitable for traditional, stable environments with clear hierarchical structures and defined rules, where she can engage in tasks with high responsibility.
Determine what you truly need. People have different goals and needs at different stages of their lives. When facing career confusion, it’s important to analyze calmly whether the current job can meet the actual needs of this stage, and whether the conflict between the two is the root cause of the "confusion." Qin Qin’s problem lies in the conflict between "money" and "environment." She desires a high income, which she cannot achieve in her current company, but choosing a company that offers a high income would mean losing her comfortable and relaxed work environment. Her self-imposed conclusion that "her personality is not suited for the industry" obscures this conflict, attributing her anxiety and restlessness to her unsuitability for the industry.
Once the key issue is identified, we advise Qin Qin to learn to let go. At a certain stage, focus on what is most important and desired, and temporarily give up things that cannot be achieved simultaneously. P016-018
