Features: The Collected Essays on Modern Chinese Literature is another major work by Mr. Guan Huaihe, following the publication of From Classical to Modern, The Tragic Decline, and Classicism and the End – The Tongcheng School and the "May Fourth" New Literature. In my opinion, The Collected Essays holds significant academic value in studying the following two issues. One is the research on the transformation of Chinese literature from classical to modern. Since the Opium War, imperial powers repeatedly launched premeditated wars against China. The Chinese people's struggles against aggression and their pursuit of national rejuvenation have continued one after another. It was precisely in this history of blood and fire, of transformation and evolution, that Chinese literature began its arduous transformation from classical to modern. For the study of the rich and complex literature of the transitional period, its significance is not limited to literature itself. Modern Chinese literature in its transitional phase is even a history of the transformation of national psychology. However, for a long time, the study of literature during this period has not received the attention it deserves.
