Table of Contents: The role of intelligence has long been recognized by people. However, in real life, we often see that the intelligence of successful individuals is not exceptional. So, what is their secret to success? Research has found that it is "emotional intelligence," which refers to a person's self-awareness, emotional management, self-motivation, empathy, and interpersonal skills. These abilities collectively constitute a person's emotional intelligence quotient. Therefore, some say: high intelligence helps you get hired, while high emotional intelligence leads to success. The formal proposal of the concept of emotional intelligence occurred around 1990, and it has only been about a decade since then. Compared to the nearly century-old concept of intelligence, emotional intelligence is truly a youngling. Due to its relatively young research history, there is limited research on it, and much is still being explored. As a result, few definitive conclusions have been reached. Different schools of thought have proposed their own ideas about emotional intelligence, and whether these views are correct or not will be verified by future research results. Currently, it is still impossible to determine their validity.
In China, since the late 20th century, attention to emotional intelligence has been steadily increasing, and publications on the topic have also been growing. These works introduce emotional intelligence from various perspectives, though they may not be perfect, they have played a significant role in popularizing the concept among the Chinese people. At the invitation of China Development Press, we compiled this book with the aim of filling in the gaps in the introduction to emotional intelligence, enabling people to gain a more comprehensive understanding of it.
The book is divided into four parts. The first part primarily introduces the general aspects of emotional intelligence, its origins and development, various theories, its physiological mechanisms, and its relationship with intelligence. The second part discusses the development and cultivation of emotional intelligence, arguing that it is a continuously evolving and improving ability, with distinct characteristics at each age stage and significant potential for cultivation through training. This part mainly introduces how to cultivate emotional intelligence. The third part focuses on how to measure emotional intelligence. It introduces two main types of measurement methods: one is scientific measurement, which is conducted by professionals to understand emotional intelligence, and the other is fun measurement, which can be done by individuals. While the accuracy of the latter is relatively low, its operation is simpler, making it more popular. The measurements introduced in this book primarily fall into this category, allowing people to roughly assess their emotional intelligence. The fourth part introduces several emotional disorders, their characteristics, and how to address them.
This book is the result of collective effort. The first part was written by Chen Guopeng, the second by Zhang Ya, the third by Zhou Yuan, and the fourth by Li Shuang. The entire book was proofread by Chen Guopeng. During the writing process, we referred to many works and papers by fellow researchers and included some tests. Although we cannot list them all in the book, our gratitude remains deep in our hearts.
Preface: Being a High Emotional Intelligence Person Due to our limited knowledge, the introduction to emotional intelligence in this book may inevitably be incomplete. Therefore, we sincerely invite experts and readers to offer their insights and corrections.
