Features: Compiling Comprehensive Chronicle of Humanities and Social Sciences Research in Chinese Universities (1996–2000) (hereinafter referred to as The Chronicle), was one of the tasks proposed in the Outline of the "Tenth Five-Year Plan" for Humanities and Social Sciences Research in Ordinary Universities Nationwide. To fulfill this task, under the leadership of the editorial committee of this book, the Social Sciences and Humanities Department of the Ministry of Education organized teachers and administrative personnel from relevant universities to establish the editorial department and research team of this book in April 2001. After repeated discussions, the editorial department and research team determined the writing plan and format of the book, which were approved by the editorial committee and subsequently, the writing work was officially launched in May of the same year. In late December 2001, the editorial committee of this book held a manuscript review meeting in Beijing, where they carefully reviewed the preliminary draft of The Chronicle and provided valuable suggestions for revision. Subsequently, the research team of this book conducted extensive supplementary research and revisions. The book was edited and compiled by Zhang Baosheng and He Yaomin, with Gu Hailiang, Jin Nuo, and Huang Bailian reviewing parts of the manuscript, respectively. This book attempts to provide readers with a comprehensive and up-to-date reference material by editing and organizing relevant primary sources, showcasing the latest achievements and current state of humanities and social sciences research in universities. It also presents the overall development of humanities and social sciences research in Chinese universities during the "Ninth Five-Year Plan" period. On this basis, it also makes preliminary summaries and analyses of the accomplishments, existing issues, research management patterns, and experiences in humanities and social sciences research in universities. Considering that reflecting the development of humanities and social sciences research in universities in the form of The Chronicle has been unprecedented since the reform and opening-up, certain materials were traced back in time to provide readers with a historical context of the development of humanities and social sciences research. The timing of some individual materials was extended slightly. We hope this book will assist the research work of humanities and social sciences teachers in universities, offer insights for research management departments and personnel in universities, and provide information for those interested in studying the development of humanities and social sciences in universities.
