What should a girl do if she has vaginal bleeding?

Patient's question:

What should a girl do if she has vaginal bleeding?

Doctor's answer:

Many factors or causes are involved, such as:
(1) Disorders of ovarian endocrine function. Most common, such as dysfunctional uterine bleeding.
(2) Uterine bleeding related to pregnancy. Common causes include miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy, molar pregnancy, partial placenta retention after delivery, and incomplete involution of the uterus.
(3) Inflammation. Common examples include vulvar ulcers, vaginal polyps, vaginitis, cervicitis, cervical polyps, and endometritis.
(4) Tumors. Such as uterine fibroids, vulvar cancer, vaginal cancer, cervical cancer, endometrial cancer, uterine sarcoma, ovarian cancer, and choriocarcinoma.
(5) Trauma, foreign bodies, and drugs. Common reproductive tract injuries, such as vulvar or vaginal perineal trauma, or vaginal bleeding caused by sexual activity (e.g., hymen or vaginal damage in virgins), can occur. Placement of an intrauterine device (IUD) often leads to uterine bleeding. Improper use of estrogen or progesterone can cause irregular vaginal bleeding.
(6) Vaginal bleeding associated with systemic diseases. Such as thrombocytopenic purpura, aplastic anemia, leukemia, hypothyroidism, and liver dysfunction.
