The national spirit is ever-evolving. Contemporary scholars note that the crimes of Japanese aggression are a matter of the past generation and are unrelated to today's Japanese, yet this history cannot be forgotten. The construction projects during the Japanese colonial era in Taiwan were an "unavoidable byproduct" that the Japanese had to leave behind. This allows for a more rational and pragmatic approach to complex historical facts.
The Chinese people, who have historically suffered from humiliation, need the spirit of nationalism. However, unlike the closed, racial, exclusionary, and emotional nationalism of the past, what we need is a rational, open, pragmatic, and composed nationalism. This insight comes from the efforts of Lian Hong and later Taiwanese historians in vigorously promoting the spirit of nationalism.
