What is appendicitis? What are the symptoms?

Patient's question:

What is appendicitis? What are the symptoms?

Doctor's answer:

The symptoms are characterized by: abrupt onset, severe condition, which may include lower abdominal pain, fever, chills, headache, and anorexia. On examination, the patient appears acutely ill, with high temperature, rapid heart rate, and muscle tension, tenderness, and rebound tenderness in the lower abdomen. Pelvic examination reveals: a large amount of purulent discharge from the vagina, significant tenderness in the fornices, tenderness and rebound tenderness in the uterus and bilateral adnexa, or thickening of one adnexa. The symptoms of chronic pelvic inflammatory disease are characterized by: slow onset and prolonged course. Systemic symptoms are often not prominent, with possible low-grade fever, easy fatigue, and lower abdominal dragging pain or lumbago. On examination, the uterus is often retroverted, restricted in mobility, or adhesive and fixed.
