1. The Manifestations of Shyness
People who are shy tend to overly restrain their words and actions and cannot fully express their thoughts and feelings. A certain degree of shyness is normal, as long as it does not hinder normal social interaction. Some people's shyness is temporary, such as children who are not yet adults. When they enter a unfamiliar environment, they inevitably become "quiet" or "reserved" for a while. Once they become familiar with the surroundings, they will interact with others like old friends. Many young women often appear shy in the presence of the opposite sex, lowering their heads and not speaking. Even when they speak occasionally, they wear a shy expression, which can be quite endearing. Women who are never shy in front of strangers may sometimes be less acceptable. Some people are shy at all times and in all situations. They are unwilling or afraid to interact with others, which is an unhealthy personality trait that needs to be overcome and changed.
2. The Causes of Shyness
(1) Inborn Factors. Some people are naturally introverted, with a temperament that falls into the mucous or melancholic type. They speak in a low voice, blush when meeting strangers, and even have a timid mentality. They think twice before raising their hands, taking steps, or asking for directions.
(2) Improper Upbringing. Some parents do not guide their children's timidity, and as a result, the children become shy and avoidant when meeting strangers or entering unfamiliar places, lacking confidence. As children enter adolescence, their self-awareness gradually strengthens, and they become sensitive to others' evaluations of them. They hope to leave a "bright image" in others' minds. For this reason, they pay great attention to their words and actions, fearing mistakes. This psychological state makes them afraid of being ridiculed in interactions, leading to unnatural behavior, rapid heartbeat, and shyness. Over time, they become reluctant to interact with others or speak in public. Proper guidance should be provided to encourage adolescents to be bold, authentic, and natural in expressing themselves. Otherwise, the problem may worsen.
(3) Lack of Confidence. Some people always believe they do not have an attractive appearance or extraordinary abilities, considering themselves mediocre. As a result, they lack confidence in interactions, overly concerned with gains and losses. Long-term caution not only prevents them from experiencing the joy of success but also makes them even less believe in their abilities. This underestimation of themselves is often a major cause of shyness.
(4) Setbacks. Statistics show that about one-quarter of shy adults were not shy as children but became shy later in life. This may be related to past setbacks. Such people were once outgoing and proactive in social interactions, but due to complex subjective and objective reasons, they experienced repeated failures, leading to timidity, withdrawal, and a passive attitude.
3. Guidance
(1) Let Go of Burdens. This means letting go of all concerns and moving forward boldly without overthinking others' opinions. Many shy people overemphasize perfection before taking action, fearing failure and the possibility of negative evaluations from others. Such self-negation and self-suggestion will undoubtedly hinder the full use of their abilities. The more they worry and fear, the greater the likelihood of failure.
(2) Build Confidence. Recognize your strengths rather than focusing only on your weaknesses. Negating yourself is to suppress your potential and hinder the full development of your abilities.
