Features: Big Trouble is a new work by Barry published in 1999. Its extraordinary opening might make readers mistake it for a picaresque novel. The first character introduced in the book is Pudge—a quintessential hobo. He drifts from place to place, always on the move, intending to hitchhike south to find a warm place to spend the winter. But he ends up traveling from Cleveland in northern America, somehow ending up in Miami in the south, where he works at a barbecue bar. Strangely enough, the barbecue bar has no barbecue grills. The story takes place in Coconut Grove, Florida, USA. Two high school students play a killing game with water guns, only to encounter a real murder during an illegal arms deal. An accidental hobo gets involved in the incident. A female high school student and a hobo with a suitcase are kidnapped by two rascals and taken aboard a flight to the Bahamas. The suitcase happens to contain a miniaturized nuclear bomb, which is accidentally activated during the pre-flight security check. A brave female police officer gives chase and boards the plane, preventing a catastrophic disaster of a plane crash with people aboard over the Atlantic Ocean. The author has been called "America's funniest person" by The New York Times. The book is humorous and comical throughout. The author satirizes American democratic elections and describes the hardships faced by small characters like hobos, advertisers, and rascals. The plot is intricate, full of suspense, and highly readable.
