How long does it usually take to see a noticeable belly during normal pregnancy?

Patient's question:

My wife is pregnant. She has been saying she's hungry these last couple of days. How long will it take before you can see her belly getting bigger?

Doctor's answer:

In the first three months of pregnancy, the uterus does not enlarge significantly. It is generally not noticeable externally until around 3 and a half to 4 months. In the third month of pregnancy, the uterus just exits the pelvic cavity, with a diameter of about 8 cm, roughly the size of a fist.
