Does gentamicin affect the fetus?

Patient's question:

Hello! I am a pregnant woman and would like to ask for advice. My last menstrual period was on August 18th. In mid-September, I experienced stomach pain and took two bottles of gentamicin sulfate (80,000 units each). Could this have any impact on the fetus? Will it cause ototoxicity? Thank you!

Doctor's answer:

Erythromycin is a contraindicated drug during pregnancy due to its significant nephrotoxicity and ototoxicity. It may affect fetal health, but the likelihood and severity of the impact vary depending on factors such as dosage, duration of use, and individual differences. It is highly variable from person to person. If you do not wish to retain the fetus, pregnancy termination should be considered in the near future. If you want to retain the fetus, special prenatal and childbirth examinations should be conducted, such as the triple screen test between weeks 14-20 of pregnancy and 3D or 4D ultrasound for fetal anomaly screening between weeks 23-26. If the results of these tests are all high-risk, further procedures such as amniocentesis or umbilical cord blood testing should be performed.
