What is the problem with itchy nipples?

Patient's question:

I've had itchy nipples for several months, but it's not like this all the time. It was still itchy last night. Is it nipple eczema? Is it dangerous? Should I see a gynecologist or go to the dermatology department?

Doctor's answer:

(1) Itchy nipples and itchy areolas may simply be a matter of allergies, but they could also be a sign of breast cancer. Therefore, it should not be taken lightly.
(2) Additionally, there is a rare condition called Paget's disease, which can cause symptoms similar to eczema around the nipple and areola. Patients may experience skin itching, stinging, burning, sometimes dark redness, bloody discharge, or painless lumps.
When there is itching in the nipple and areola accompanied by discharge, or combined with painless lumps, for peace of mind, it is still recommended to visit a general surgery or breast surgery department for further examination to confirm the condition.
