Since ancient times, only two animals have been allowed to roam freely in human dwellings—dogs and cats. Of course, people also keep other animals at home, such as goldfish and birds. But goldfish are kept in fish tanks, and birds are caged. Only cats and dogs are permitted to wander around our rooms. This shows that we share a special bond with dogs (and cats)—one that is ancient and unique. The unbreakable bond between humans and dogs has a history of over 10,000 years. It seems humans and dogs have entered into an agreement: dogs perform certain tasks for humans, and in return, humans provide proper care for dogs, including food, water, and shelter.
Humans ask dogs to do many things: guard homes, protect people, help with hunting, eliminate harmful insects and animals, and pull sleds. There are also more specialized tasks, such as training dogs to collect bird eggs, sniff out drugs at airports, guide the blind, rescue injured people, track fleeing criminals, participate in dog racing competitions, go into space, and even act in movies.
