Publish Date: 1973-05-01
Features: Mother is one of Gorky's renowned works. Through the story of young worker Pavel and his mother Nilofona, who grow into conscious revolutionary fighters amid the waves of revolution, the novel portrays a well-rounded image of the socialist new person, reflecting in a realistic and concrete way the historical process of Russia's second revolution period. The novel was written between June 1906 and April of the following year in the United States and Italy, and was soon translated into English. It was first serialized in the Appleton Magazine in New York from December 1906 to June of the following year. In April 1907, an English translation was published as a standalone book in the United States, followed by German and Russian translations in Berlin in July, and an English translation in London (titled Comrades). In Russia, it was only serialized in the annual collection edited by the St. Petersburg Knowledge Publishing House from the second half of 1907 to 1908, but it was arbitrarily censored by the Tsarist government's press censorship authorities. Ten years later, in 1917, a complete original edition finally appeared in Russia.
