Features: Peony, with large flower shapes, vibrant colors, and elegant, upright leaves, is renowned as the "National Color" and the "Premier of Flowers." Peony is also a symbol of wealth, good fortune, happiness, and peace, hence the name "Flower of Wealth," making it deeply loved by the general public. Peonies come in numerous colors, including pink, deep red, purplish-red, yellow, and white, among others. There are extremely rich varieties and names, such as the white "Songbai" and "Kunshan Nightlight," the pinkish-blue "Lantianyu," the yellow "Yao Huang," the green "Dou Liu," the light and dark lilac "Wei Zi" and "Dazuifen," the silver-red "Bingzhao Hongshi," the pink "Dajinfen," the peach-red "Dahongjianrong," the deep red "Zhuangyuanhong," the purplish-red "Yanlongzi," and even the near-black "Mo Jianrong," as well as the "Erqiao" with the same stem but different flowers or colors. Truly a riot of colors and hues. Currently, Heze in Shandong and Luoyang in Henan are the regions with the most diverse peony varieties in China, boasting hundreds of types.
Peony is a deciduous shrub that blooms in late spring with a captivating fragrance, surpassing all other flowers in beauty. The bark and roots of peony are used as traditional Chinese medicine, holding significant economic value. Peonies thrive in cool climates, dislike extreme heat, fear severe cold, prefer dry conditions, and avoid waterlogging. Therefore, they are difficult to grow in rainy and humid southern regions. When painting, it is not advisable to pair peonies with pond edges or water features, as this contradicts their ecological characteristics.
With an abundance of varieties, painters have employed diverse techniques to depict peonies. As beginners, we need not cover everything at once. Instead, focus on understanding the ecological structure, shaping features, color variations, and the elegance of peonies to capture their essence. Through continuous practice, starting from the simple to the complex, from the surface to the core, and learning to select, omit, exaggerate, and transform, while capturing the fundamental characteristics of peonies, one can achieve a harmonious balance of form and spirit.
This introductory guide to painting peonies provides beginners with foundational knowledge and basic techniques, making it easier to understand and start painting. As the saying goes, "Practice makes perfect." I wish everyone the best of luck in observing, thinking, and practicing, and may you achieve fruitful results.
