Patient's question:
There are 8 days left until my due date, and I really want to know what kind of feeling "contractions" are, as described by the doctor. Every time I ask the doctor at the prenatal check-up, none of them explain it to me. The baby is almost here, yet I still don't understand what contractions are. I hope a doctor can help me explain it in detail. Thanks! There are 8 days left until my due date, and I really want to know what kind of feeling "contractions" are, as described by the doctor. Doctor's answer:
Contraction is the rhythmic tightening of the uterus. During labor, contractions last for 30 seconds with intervals of 5-6 minutes. As labor progresses, contractions gradually become longer in duration and shorter in intervals. In the late stages of pregnancy, false contractions (Braxton Hicks contractions) may begin, which are short and irregular in duration. These generally do not require intervention.
Before labor begins, regular abdominal pain (contractions) will reappear. These contractions will last for about 20-30 seconds with intervals of about 10 minutes. During contractions, the abdomen becomes tight and hard. As labor progresses, contractions will gradually intensify, lasting for about 50 seconds to 1 minute with intervals of about 2 minutes.
If you experience regular contractions or vaginal leakage (a small amount of fluid or spotting) around your due date, it is recommended that you go to the nearest hospital for a check-up and to be prepared for delivery.
