Features: This book is divided into six chapters. The first chapter will briefly introduce Tocqueville's life and historical context; the second and third chapters will primarily explore his main theme "democracy," explaining his important work Democracy in America, analyzing his view of America and his theory of democracy; the fourth and fifth chapters will primarily explore his second theme "revolution," explaining his Memoirs and The Old Regime and the French Revolution, analyzing the reality of French democracy and tracing its origins; the sixth chapter will primarily introduce the history and current state of Tocqueville studies, as well as the sources of Tocqueville's thought. In summary, this book attempts to comb through the confusions, gains, and lessons of France and the United States in their journey toward free democracy through an evaluation of Tocqueville himself and his works. The 19th-century United States and France, respectively from both positive and negative perspectives, demonstrated that the central issue of the democratic era is to preserve freedom while pursuing equality; otherwise, democracy faces the risk of falling into authoritarianism. The only solution is freedom—as freedom for the individual and as freedom for the citizen. However, apart from the core material, the author has not been able to fully access all the necessary materials for studying Tocqueville. At the same time, although the author has strived to remain impartial, it may not have been consistently maintained. Additionally, due to limitations, inevitable differences in arguments may arise, and it is hoped that they can be addressed in future efforts.
