Does ovulation cause abdominal pain?

Patient's question:

Is it normal for your stomach to feel bloated and painful during those days of ovulation?

Doctor's answer:

After intercourse during ovulation, lower abdominal pain usually subsides within 1-2 days. This is primarily because during the ovulation process, the mature follicle in a woman's ovary ruptures, and the fluid from the post-ovulatory follicle stimulates the peritoneum, causing lower abdominal pain. This type of lower abdominal pain is generally mild and not easily noticeable. Clinically, after intercourse during ovulation, lower abdominal pain manifests as a pain sensation in one side of the lower abdomen, though the pain is not severe. As women experience ovulation once a month, the lower abdominal pain also follows a cyclical pattern. Since ovulation alternates between the left and right sides, pain may alternate between the left and right lower abdomen. This physiological lower abdominal pain typically lasts for 1-2 days and does not cause harm to a woman's body.
