What is gestational diabetes

Patient's question:

What is gestational diabetes?

Doctor's answer:

Patients with diabetes before pregnancy who become pregnant are referred to as diabetes complicated with pregnancy; the other type is patients with normal glucose metabolism before pregnancy or potential impaired glucose tolerance who develop diabetes during pregnancy, also known as gestational diabetes (GDM). In diabetic pregnant women, more than 80% have GDM, while those with diabetes complicated with pregnancy account for less than 20%. Most GDM patients can return to normal glucose metabolism after delivery, but their risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the future increases. The clinical course of diabetic pregnancy is complex. It poses significant harm to both the mother and child and must be taken seriously.
