Publishing Date: 1991-03-01
Features: This History of German Literature is based on the author's lecture notes on German literature, supplemented, refined, and revised. The following points are explained: The content of this book covers German literature from antiquity to 1945. Although titled History of German Literature, it includes Swiss and Austrian literature written in German before 1945. Traditionally, German-authored Histories of German Literature have included Swiss and Austrian literature written in German as well. The original readers of this book were students of foreign language departments in China, most of whom had not read the original works mentioned in the book (not even the published Chinese translations). Therefore, when introducing the representative works of each author, the plot of the works is explained. As a result, this book can serve as a textbook on German literature for college and university students, as well as an introductory guide to the history of German literature for other readers, making it accessible to the general public. When introducing literary movements, the book is based on historical development, providing background materials, and uses literary movements, literary schools, their representative writers, and representative works as the framework and focus of each chapter. Literary history is the science of studying the laws of literary development, the study of the emergence, development, and decline of various literary phenomena, literary schools, and literary struggles in history, all of which are reflected through the literary theories and works of writers. The author strives to objectively analyze and evaluate literary movements, literary schools, and literary works, and makes an effort to connect literary phenomena, historical development, and philosophical trends. During the vertical narrative, horizontal connections are made as much as possible.
