Features: This book provides a concise introduction to the origins, social background, and the protagonist Julien of the novel The Red and the Black. It is not intended as a guide, as critics have already offered many insightful discussions on this work. Readers with keen eyes can form their own judgments. The translator, Yin Yi, has made every effort to faithfully express the style and meaning of the original text. Stendhal chose the title The Red and the Black with profound significance. Red represents revolution, military honors, and a military career, while black symbolizes the black robe of a clergyman, the church, and the clergy's profession. The implication is that in the Napoleonic era, young men, especially those not of noble birth, could join the revolutionary army, achieve success and recognition through bravery and weapons, and rise to prominence—"wining titles and privileges through every swordstroke on the frontier." However, with the passage of time, Napoleon's defeat and the restoration of the feudal monarchy, the nobility returned in triumph, allying themselves with the church. Commoners had no ( means "" in Chinese, which translates to "" in English), and could only advance through the clergy. The era of thunderous storms and heroic spirit had passed, and France entered a period of intrigue, hypocrisy, corruption, and suppression of individuality and ambition. The subtitle Chronicle of 1830 clearly indicates that the book, in the form of a novel, reflects the class struggle of the restoration period from various perspectives through the short, arduous life of Julien in his struggle against fate. The Red and the Black is not history, but surpasses it. It vividly portrays the social realities of France during the restoration period through its moving imagery and dramatic plot. The plot of The Red and the Black revolves around the protagonist Julien. Although there are many characters in the book, they are merely accessories to the main figure.
