Features: Father Chen Brey was the Director of the Secretariat of Chiang Kai-shek, known as the "intellectual backbone." He was loyal to Chiang Kai-shek and the reactionary forces of the Kuomintang, but the Kuomintang's ultimate defeat on the mainland shattered his ideals. Despite having such a father, his daughter Chen Lian was a staunch believer in communism and an underground worker for the Communist Party. She was willing to sacrifice everything for the cause of national liberation. Due to their differing political ideals, the conflicts between the two generations could not be reconciled and only intensified, forcing them to sever their family ties and eventually leading to a complete break. The intertwined complexities of state affairs and family matters, ideals and (affection), era and fate brought a tragic end to a loving father and daughter, who took different paths in life under different historical contexts, yet both ended their lives in tragedy.
