The by Selma Lagerl?f (Sweden)
Classic Introduction
This is the masterpiece of Selma Lagerl?f, a Swedish female writer and the recipient of the 1909 Nobel Prize in Literature. Lagerl?f's friend, the Dean of the Normal School, wanted someone to write a popular book for children as a history and geography textbook for children aged 9 to 13. The book was required to be warm, accessible, and naturally integrate Swedish history and geography, making it a highly unified read in terms of fun and knowledge. Lagerl?f was willing to use her literary talents to serve her country's education. She conducted a comprehensive study tour of Sweden, collecting all the necessary materials, and successfully completed her friend's request over a period of five years. From its first publication to 1940, when the author passed away, the book sold a total of 3.5 million copies, and it has been reprinted every few years since then, making it one of the best-selling works in Swedish literature. This work not only brought Lagerl?f fame in Sweden but also earned her an immortal reputation in the world of literature.
Brief Summary
The protagonist of this fairy tale is Nils H?gglund, a 14-year-old boy from a rural area in southern Sweden. His parents are kind, hardworking, and extremely poor farmers. However, Nils has no interest in reading and loves to play tricks, tormenting the chickens, cats, dogs, and rabbits at home. One day in early spring, his parents went to church, and while at home, he teased a small sprite, who transformed him into a tiny, thumb-sized creature capable of understanding bird language. Just then, a flock of wild geese flew overhead, and the male goose at home also wanted to join them in flight. To prevent the goose from flying away, Nils tightly hugged its neck, only to be carried up into the sky by the goose. From then on, he rode on the goose's back, traveling south and north, exploring various places, flying from the south to the Lapland Province in the far north, and returning home after eight months. On his journey, he saw the magnificent peaks and rivers of his homeland, learned about its geography and history, heard many stories and legends, and experienced many risks and hardships. During his travels, he learned many virtues from his companions and other animals, gradually correcting his mischievous and unruly behavior, and cultivating excellent qualities such as selflessness and a willingness to help others. When he returned home, he not only transformed back into a tall and handsome boy but also became a gentle, loyal, kind, helpful, and responsible person.
Reviews and Nils Soars Together
In his acceptance speech for the 1994 Nobel Prize in Literature, Kenzaburō ōe first expressed his gratitude to The for bringing joy to his childhood. I believe anyone who has read this book will thank its author—Selma Lagerl?f, the renowned Swedish female writer, who is the only person in the world to win the Nobel Prize in Literature solely for her outstanding fairy tales. I am confident that this book will bring joy to many young readers, just as it brought me joy in my childhood. During my childhood, fairy tales like The, The Tales of Hans Christian Andersen, The Water Child, The Little Princess, The Flower Drummer, and Pinocchio took me into a world full of wonder and
